Our approach to High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) focuses on recognising and nurturing students’ strengths through meaningful challenge, engaging learning and opportunities to explore new possibilities. We support students to turn their potential into achievement, encouraging them to think creatively, pursue their interests and deepen their understanding. Through this approach, we build confident, curious learners who are supported to extend themselves and grow in knowledge.

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
- High expectations for every learner: We build on students’ strengths and provide support and challenge that extend their knowledge, skills and thinking.
- Teaching that responds to students: We check understanding throughout lessons and adjust the pace, support and level of challenge to help students progress.
- Strong language foundations: We explicitly teach vocabulary and provide opportunities for purposeful talk, helping our multilingual learners express complex ideas and access challenging learning.
- Deeper thinking and problem-solving: We teach students to ask thoughtful questions, compare ideas, explain their reasoning and explore different solutions.
- Purposeful collaboration: Students work independently and in varied groups to share ideas, learn from others and strengthen their understanding.

- Nurturing creativity: Specialised art groups, dance, hip hop, cheerleading, choir, recorder, ukulele, Samba Group and our music program give students opportunities to explore and develop their talents.
- Developing sporting skills: PSSA, our Athletics Carnival, the Premier’s Sporting Challenge and Swim School help students build skills, teamwork and confidence.
- Growing student leaders: Our Student Representative Council (SRC), school leaders, sport house leaders and peer support leaders provide meaningful opportunities to lead, take responsibility and support others.
- Building community connections: Fundraising events encourage students to contribute to their community, while our SaCC playgroup helps local children and families connect with our school.
- Supporting personal growth: Across these experiences, we encourage students to try new challenges, pursue their interests and grow as confident, curious learners.
- The Premier’s Debating Challenge helps our students to build logical arguments and confidence in public speaking.
- The Premier’s Reading Challenge helps our students to develop a love of reading, improve literacy skills, and build confidence through engaging with a wide range of books.
- The Premier’s Sporting Challenge (PSC) promotes whole-school participation in physical activity with leadership pathways and professional learning.
- Participation in PSSA enables our students to trial and compete in sports against local schools, fostering discipline, commitment and collaboration.
Sporting Challenges
Students at Wiley Park Public School have many opportunities to build physical skills, enjoy being active and challenge themselves. PSSA, our Athletics Carnival and the Premier’s Sporting Challenge encourage teamwork, persistence and school pride. Swim School, dance, hip hop and cheerleading offer further opportunities to develop confidence, coordination and new skills in a supportive environment.
Academic competitions
We nurture curious minds through chess, Scrabble, spelling bees, public speaking, STEAM and robotics. These experiences encourage students to think critically, explore ideas, solve problems and communicate with confidence. Competitions within and beyond our school provide opportunities for students to extend their skills, celebrate their strengths and represent Wiley Park Public School with pride.
Music ensembles
Our Samba group, choir, recorder ensemble and band give students opportunities to discover the joy of making music together. Through regular rehearsals and performances, students develop musical skills, explore their creativity and build confidence. Our ensembles encourage collaboration and persistence, supporting students to nurture their talents and share their achievements with the school community.
